The Diocese of Orange and Christ Cathedral transformed the space beneath Christ Cathedral into the new St. Callistus Chapel and Crypts, offering a more intimate worship experience for parishioners throughout Orange County. Spanning approximately 11,000 SF, the chapel accommodates up to 220 people and includes a complete altar area for Masses. Designed in a Romano-Byzantine style with sacred art from Granda of Madrid, Spain, the renovation features stunning enhancements such as Italian marble on floors, walls, and columns, a wood quatrefoil ceiling system with perforated panels and diffused lighting, and custom metal and wood doors. The project also included new lighting, a state-of-the-art AV system, and acoustic plaster for optimal sound performance during events. Additional features include concrete crypts with Italian marble crypt fronts, columbaria with custom LED-lit cabinetry, shrine spaces with octagonal and spherical ceilings, and upgraded fire life safety systems, including automatic fire doors. This beautifully renovated space provides a sacred environment for worship, community events, and the interment of bishops, ensuring a lasting legacy of faith and service.
