Phase II of the Our Lady of La Vang Shrine on the Christ Cathedral campus in Garden Grove focused on creating the Marian Gardens on the east side of the shrine. Spanning approximately 3,500 SF, the gardens were designed as a serene and reflective space, featuring four circular areas to host small prayer groups in a tranquil setting. Each garden highlights the Mysteries of the Rosary, along with imagery depicting the life of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The project incorporated poured-in-place concrete walls with aesthetic jointing and exposed form ties, new landscaping, irrigation, and storm drain systems. Integrated lighting enhances the experience in each garden, interacting with other features, such as angled colored glass, which casts vibrant patterns on the ground at sunrise. Unique design elements include wood and metal pieces arranged to represent Jesus’ “crown of thorns.” A donor monument was also added to commemorate contributions to this sacred space. Accompanying the Marian Gardens is another garden resembling the Garden of Gethsemane in Israel, with mature olive trees, benches, and a Jesus statue.
